Atletico Madrid refused to entertain interest from Manchester United for Conor Gallagher

Manchester United had been looking to bring in a midfielder along the summer transfer window as Ruben Amorim looked to add some sense of presence in the second phase, and this is where the Premier League heavyweights looked to make a move for Baleba, but as it didn’t come off, the chiefs at Carrington pivoted into signing Conor Gallagher in the final 48 hours of the transfer window.

United pushed to land Conor Gallagher on a possible loan transfer

Manchester Reds put through a possible loan proposal to secure a Cobham academy graduate, which was swiftly rejected by Atletico Madrid. And this is according to the latest report by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who has revealed new details about the England international’s current situation whilst speaking on his YouTube channel.

Gallagher moved to Atletico Madrid last season in what was seen as a transfer coup for the Spanish giants, but while he has been figuring out how to feature under Diego Simeone, United looked to him as a possible short-term midfield fix at Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim & Co. were trying to explore options in the final hours of the window, and that try from United to secure his services on loan was dealt with quite similarly to how Atleti responded to Crystal Palace’s loan offer about ten days before.

Gallagher would have been an interesting addition but United left it too late

The Chelsea academy ace was seen as a dynamic option for the Manchester Reds given his abilities to be a working horse in that second phase, and he could have ended up resolving a lot of problems for United if he had ended up moving to Old Trafford, but Atletico had fairly made their stance over his exit clear when they knocked back that Palace loan offer earlier in the month, which showed how they did not want to end up parting ways with Gallagher, especially not on a loan exit.

And as the transfer window came to close, United didn’t end up signing any midfielder, so for now they will continue to rely on exit-bound Kobbie Mainoo, who is fighting to secure a regular place in Ruben Amorim’s starting lineup, but there remains a lack of depth in those positions going into autumn.

Gallagher’s move would have been interesting, but I think the club ended up leaving it too little too late.
