Andre Onana’s struggles deepened this week after the goalkeeper committed a costly error in Cameroon’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Cape Verde on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old, whose Manchester United career has been blighted by inconsistency, was again in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. His mistake arrived early in the second half when Cape Verde striker Dailon Livramento broke clear. Rather than advancing to narrow the angle, Onana bizarrely backed off and remained rooted to his line, offering the forward a simple finish.

Replays showed the United goalkeeper diving early and almost slumping by his post as the shot found the net. The lapse proved decisive, handing Cape Verde, ranked 73rd in the world, a shock 1–0 victory. Cameroon, 51st in FIFA’s rankings, remains second in Group D on 15 points, while Cape Verde surged four points clear at the top with 19.
For Onana, the error added to a catalog of high-profile mishaps that have defined his time in Manchester. Signed from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for £47.2M ($63.8M) as David de Gea’s successor, he has never settled into the role.
Costly mistakes in the Premier League and Champions League undermined his standing, and his erratic form has long divided opinion among supporters and pundits alike. Falling down the pecking order under manager Ruben Amorim, with Altay Bayindir and summer signing Senne Lammens now preferred, Onana is poised for a move away.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reports that United has agreed to a season-long loan with Trabzonspor, expected to be completed before the Turkish transfer deadline on Sept. 12. The deal contains no fee and no option to buy, but the Turkish club will cover his salary.
The switch offers Onana the chance to reset his career out of the Premier League glare. Yet, with each error magnified and shared globally, doubts remain as to whether he can recapture the composure that once made him a Champions League finalist with Inter Milan. For now, his immediate task will be to put his latest mistake behind him as he prepares for a new chapter in Turkey.
