Manchester United full-back limps off after suffering injury

Manchester United look to have another injury to worry about as their Carrington treatment room gains another visitor.

With Matthijs de Ligt still sidelined by a back issue and Patrick Dorgu also unavailable, the injury list has already narrowed the options in the wide channels.

Now there is a fresh concern after a defender was forced off while trying to protect a hard-earned advantage away from home.

As Manchester United’s Women’s side continued their run in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, one of Marc Skinner’s stars was forced off.

Manchester United’s official website reported that Anna Sandberg limped off at half-time in Manchester United Women’s 3-0 win at Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League knockout play-off first leg on Thursday night.

Surprisingly she returned for the second half, however her final moment came just after the restart as Anna Sandberg initially tried to continue but the limp never eased, and the decision was made quickly once the second half began to stretch.

Unfortunately, Anna Sandberg’s knock adds uncertainty ahead of next Thursday’s second leg at the Progress With Unity Stadium, with United carrying a three-goal cushion.

At this time no diagnosis or return timeline has been publicly confirmed.

Sandberg’s trajectory at United has been trending up since her 2024 arrival from BK Häcken on a long contract, a move widely reported as a Swedish-record fee.

Her role has evolved from managed minutes into trusted starts, and she has already delivered high-end moments, including a long-range goal against Chelsea earlier this season.

What it means next is selection pressure. If Anna Sandberg misses time, Gabby George is the most natural like-for-like option, while United may also shuffle balance on the opposite side depending on game state and opponent.

The second leg now becomes a test of control as much as the scoreline.
