Manchester United are all set to experience their worst-ever domestic season this year, as they are languishing in the 16th position in the Premier League table with 17 defeats at the moment.
No amount of seemingly ludicrous excuses like one of concentrating more on the UEFA Europa League can make up for the fact that Manchester United continue to be dire under Ruben Amorim.
Their latest defeat in the league came against West Ham United, who have been struggling to find form themselves this season.
Reaching the Europa League final alongside Tottenham Hotspur, another English team that has been pathetic with their domestic form, is hardly any consolation, given the obvious lack of competition in that tournament.
In such a scenario, Manchester United are joining the race with Chelsea to sign Liam Delap, the Ipswich Town striker, who has scored 12 goals this season.
Manchester United Have Let Some Quality Players Go To Other Clubs
The Red Devils have missed the opportunity to sign Harry Kane a couple of seasons ago.
There was hardly any competition from other English clubs to sign the English captain, but United opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund for almost £65 million.
Hojlund is still quite young but has scored only 26 goals in 92 appearances for Manchester United. Kane, on the other hand, has almost been scoring a goal every game on an average for Bayern.
United have splashed £60 million on Mason Mount as well, but have hardly reaped any rewards for it.
Delap, if signed by the Red Devils, might barely reach double digits yet again for them, but that might not be enough to take United to the vicinity of a top-four finish.
Delap might cost them relatively less at around £30 million, but United cannot afford to miss out on anyway other player of higher quality on the grounds of his being slightly more expensive.
United have let both Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho leave on loan, and hence, are short of quality wingers as well.
Someone like Kvicha Kvaratskhelia would have been a perfect fit at Old Trafford. The young Georgian winger has been superb for both Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain during the last few years and might be able to win the UEFA Champions League title with the latter this season.
The same goes for Ousmane Dembele, who joined PSG for a fee of £50 million and has scored a very impressive 33 goals in 46 matches this season.
Another example is Raphinha, who went from Leeds United to Barcelona for £55 million and is among the Ballon d’Or contenders after having a stupendous season for the Catalans.
The likes of Kvaratskhelia and Dembele have thus cost PSG less than what Hojlund and Mount have Manchester United.
However, the difference in the output between the two pairs has been staggering. Hence, if the Red Devils go on to opt for mediocrity once again in signing Delap, they might thus be repeating their mistake.
If Amorim harbours any ambition to take United back to where it belonged, he cannot do so with the help of mediocre players.

RB Leipzig Set Transfer Price For Benjamin Sesko Amid Newcastle Interest
RB Leipzig have put a price tag of €80m on Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško with Newcastle United among the clubs monitoring the situation. The 21-year-old has garnered plenty of headlines after a solid first season in the Bundesliga and Leipzig will not move away from the price tag they have set if teams do come looking for his signature this summer. Šeško scored 13 goals in 34 league games last season after joining Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023. The striker's physicality, speed and finishing has made him a seeking a hot property for teams in European football and that is why multiple top clubs have been keeping tabs on him. According to Sky Sport Germany, Leipzig’s price could rise to €100m if performance-related bonuses or add-ons are included, but the base fee will not be less than €80m. Benjamin Šeško is under contract until 2029 after signing an extension in June but that deal has a release clause that can be triggered as early as this transfer window. Reports from England suggest Newcastle would be willing to spend big on a player like Šeško but the club also need to be careful with their spending to stay within Profit and Sustainability Rules. At the moment there is no agreement, however, internal discussions are currently taking place regarding a potential move. Arsenal were previously linked with Šeško and had preliminary talks but have since shifted their focus to other attacking targets including Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres. In the past, Chelsea and Manchester United were also mentioned as clubs that were interested but neither club has made an official offer. Leipzig have left the door ajar for the sale, but are under no pressure and do not have to sell unless someone meets their price. The Seattle Storm are looking to make things right after Tuesday’s 87-63 blowout loss to Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings. They get a chance to do so on Thursday when they return to action against the Chicago Sky in a road game at Wintrust Arena. The Storm got a big boost ahead of the Sky matchup, which comes in the form of seven-time All-Star Skylar Diggins returning to action after a one-game absence. After registering the first triple-double in WNBA All-Star Game history on Saturday, Diggins was unable to suit up against Dallas on Tuesday due to personal reasons. The 5-foot-9 guard was not listed on Seattle’s injury report for the Sky game, though, which means that Diggins should be back in the starting lineup come Thursday. This is a crucial development for the Storm, who will be looking to improve on their 14-10 record. In 23 games played this season, Diggins has produced averages of 17.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.5 triples per game. Chicago Sky List Angel Reese as Questionable to Play Against the Seattle Storm While the Storm got some good news ahead of Thursday’s clash, the same cannot be said for the Sky. This is after two-time All-Star forward Angel Reese was added to the injury report with a back problem. The silver lining is that Reese, who missed Chicago’s last game before the All-Star break with a leg injury, is listed as questionable to play, which means that there’s still a chance that she’s able to suit up against Seattle. Reese looked fine on Tuesday as Chicago suffered a 91-68 blowout loss to the Minnesota Lynx, posting an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. It is unclear exactly when Reese sustained the injury, but it has now placed her status against Seattle in jeopardy. Did the Yankees Just Help Anthony Volpe With This Ryan McMahon Trade?
The Yankees didn’t trade for Ryan McMahon to help Anthony Volpe. Not directly, anyway. They made the move to shore up the infield, cut down on errors, and stop bleeding runs behind Max Fried. They needed steadier hands, not a defensive whisperer. But according to former Rockies outfielder and current broadcaster Ryan Spilborghs, McMahon’s arrival could have a secondary benefit—helping Volpe get back to his Gold Glove level. “I think so,” Spilborghs said on SiriusXm’s MLB Network Radio’s “Loud Outs” show right after the news was announced. “The range you’re going to get with McMahon... he’s played with really good shortstops—Trevor Story, and now a Gold Glover in Ezequiel Tovar. It’s not an accident that a shortstop wins a Gold Glove. Because the guy next to him was really good.” It’s a simple point, but one Yankees fans should appreciate. The left side of the infield operates as a unit, especially when dealing with groundball-heavy pitchers like Fried. In 2023, Volpe was a breakout defender. In 2025, he’s been fighting through inconsistency, Both mentally and mechanically, and was recently the focus of some tough-love commentary from Joe Maddon. The former MLB manager actually suggested sending Volpe to the minors to help him reset his mind. Adding McMahon, who ranks among the league’s top defensive third basemen since 2021 in Defensive Runs Saved, could stabilize that side of the field—and in the process, take some pressure off Volpe. More consistency. More trust. More plays made. Helping Volpe get back on track is not the headline reason the Yankees acquired McMahon. They desperately needed to improve their defense at third base and protect their investment in ground-ball pitcher Max Fried. But if it gets Volpe back to being a decent shortstop, it could end up being one of the most important ones.
