Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to rebuild with quality players in the summer

Manchester United are going through one of their darkest moments in recent years. With a Premier League campaign that has left little room for pride and a football that has failed to convince either friends or strangers, the club are in need of serious change. Performance has been far from the minimum expected, and the pressure has multiplied. Many players have not performed as expected, the team has failed in key matches, and the coach’s future is at stake in the Europa League final. The fans demand solutions, not promises, and the sporting management seem to know it.

Manchester United have expressed interest in signing AC Milan Defender Theo Hernandez this summer

It is in this context that a piece of news has started to make the rounds. According to information from the Italian media Tuttomercato, as relayed by Give Me Sport, the Frenchman Theo Hernandez is in the Red Devils’ sights. The Milan left-back, who does not look favourably on staying at a club outside the Champions League, could leave the San Siro after six years.

His contract expires in 2026, but his price would be around €30 million. Real Madrid, one of the possible destinations, have already been ruled out by a technical decision. Manchester United are still looking for a left-back after losing the race for Alphonso Davies, and the opportunity with Theo could fit both in terms of situation and cost.

Manchester United’s need is clear; they have no real depth on the left flank and have had to improvise on too many occasions. Theo would fit in well, especially if Rúben Amorim keeps the 3-4-2-1 formation he used this season. In that system, the Frenchman would move with ease, covering the whole of the flank with his stride, reaching the box with power, and giving width to the attack. His ability to combine speed with physical traits gives him an advantage against tight defences. It is a difficult profile to find: offensive, but with tactical awareness, aggressive without losing control.

But the deal is not closed. Firstly, because United still don’t know if they will play in the Champions League. If they lose the final to Spurs, Theo could rule them out, as he wants that competition. Second, although the price has come down, it is still a considerable investment for a club that must prioritise other areas. There is urgency, yes, but there must also be intelligence. The signing of Theo would not solve all the ills, but it would send a clear signal: the club want to rebuild from players with hunger, who still have a way to go.

A different angle to the debate is how this potential arrival would affect Luke Shaw. The Englishman has been consistent when fit, but his physical problems have relegated him to the sidelines. Would he accept a more secondary role or demand his exit? Competition can raise standards, but it also creates friction. Amorim will have to manage egos well if the Frenchman’s arrival becomes a reality. In spite of everything, Theo and United seem made for each other: a club that want to get back to the top and a player who doesn’t want to wait any longer.
