Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham had everything United’s season has been missing, right up until it didn’t.

Bryan Mbeumo’s 73rd-minute strike put Michael Carrick’s side in front, and Rodrigo Bentancur’s headbutt on Luke Shaw reduced Spurs to ten men soon after.

A win looked inevitable, yet United dropped deeper and deeper until Dominic Solanke met Sandro Tonali’s cross with a stoppage-time header.

That leaves them on six points from six matches, the lowest return at this stage since 1986.

Carrick said the jeers from the home crowd “hurt”, and the mood inside the club is just as uneasy.

Manchester United hierarchy regret buying two 2026 summer signings

Senior figures at Manchester United have concluded that this summer’s recruitment was not good enough, The Sun reports.

The Sun reports that both Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos were way down their list of targets heading into the summer.

The plan was to rebuild in stages, with Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko and Lammens costing £225.2 million last year before attention turned to midfield.

This time the budget shrank to £155 million, and the players who actually arrived were not the ones the club set out to land.

Elliot Anderson, the name United wanted most, joined Manchester City in a deal reported at £116 million.

Mateus Fernandes chose Tottenham and was left out of their starting XI at Old Trafford, while Aurelien Tchouameni was another name on the wish list.

Atalanta’s Ederson was meant to cost £35 million until a medical flagged a serious knee problem and United walked away, a setback insiders now see as pivotal.

Youri Tielemans arrived as the alternative, and Andrey Santos followed from Chelsea for £50 million, though he has played just 16 Premier League minutes since the opening-day defeat at Hull.

Only Carlos Baleba, a target for more than a year, fitted the original blueprint, and he finally made his debut on Saturday, replacing Tielemans after 58 minutes.

Left-back is the other regret, with early contact over Newcastle’s Lewis Hall going nowhere before he signed a new deal last month.

Shaw’s withdrawal in stoppage time, and the limp he was seen with afterwards, underline the problem.

Patrick Dorgu is out for weeks and Noussair Mazraoui is a doubt, leaving Carrick with almost no cover on that side.

Pressure on the head coach is growing, but those inside the club now accept the squad he was handed was never complete.
