Manchester United initiate fresh talks to sign Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins

The 2024/25 season became one of the most embarrassing seasons in Manchester United’s history. Finishing 15th in the Premier League, losing the Europa League final to Tottenham, and now being completely out of European football in 2025/26—all these are extremely difficult for a fan to digest. The arrival of Ruben Amorim brought some hope, but it would have been wrong to expect a miracle in half a season. Now the club have time to think carefully about every step.

Manchester United have shown speed and taken initiative in the summer transfer window. Big names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have arrived. Young Diogo Leon has also become a part of the future plans, but one thing is still missing, and that is a reliable striker. The performances of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have not been as strong as needed. The lack of consistent goals last season had worsened the condition of the club. In such a situation, an experienced and goal machine striker is needed the most for the new season.

Eye on Ollie Watkins, but price remains a hindrance

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, as relayed by GiveMeSport, United have had fresh talks with Aston Villa regarding Ollie Watkins. The club are currently stuck on the price, £60 million seems too much. If Villa reduce that, United can move the deal forward. Villa can sell Watkins only if they find a good replacement.

The Englishman’s biggest strength is his consistency. His 87 goals for Villa so far show that he makes a difference for the team every season. The 29-year-old’s pace, movement and positioning are always a threat to defenders. He is also very strong in the air and can create space for the midfielders. Watkins can form a formidable trio with newcomers Cunha and Mbeumo. The Englishman will fit perfectly into Amorim’s high-pressure system.

Why will he be better than Benjamin Sesko?

As United fans, we believe Ollie Watkins is a much better option than Benjamin Sesko. Sesko is young and full of potential, but lacks Premier League experience. Watkins, on the other hand, is a proven goal scorer. He is 29 and at his peak. The Englishman’s clinical finishing and movement can change the game for United. Along with attacking midfielders like Cunha and Mbeumo, he can carry the team forward on many occasions.

However, Villa’s £60 million is the main hindrance. United are currently reluctant to pay this price, perhaps due to his age. However, if Villa soften a little, this deal is possible. Bringing in a player like Watkins means guaranteed goals, and right now, that’s what United need most.
