According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United have put an offer close to €80 million on the table for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez. It is said the player is enticed by the prospect of playing a ‘leading role’ for a club with long tradition but currently undergoing a rebuild.

A youth product of the famed La Masia academy, Fermin Lopez made his senior Barcelona debut in August 2023 and has grown leaps and bounds since then. The Spaniard has been a regular in the club’s first-team squad since his debut in 2023/24, amassing 88 appearances thus far, scoring 19 goals and providing 11 assists.

However, the 22-year-old is not guaranteed regular minutes under head coach Hansi Flick, which leaves his future at Nou Camp uncertain. Fermin has a contract at the club until 2029, having penned an extension last year.

The aforementioned report adds are presently assessing Man United’s supposed offer for their academy graduate. They are gauging the sporting impact of Fermin’s departure and the capital they can gain to ease their financial difficulties.

Man United do not need Fermin Lopez

As talented as a player Fermin is with high ceiling, thanks to his consistent performances and development at Barcelona, Man United do not have space for him. Given United have already brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Sesko this summer, the Barcelona starlet will struggle for minutes at Old Trafford.

The Spanish international is effective in the final third of the pitch. He is technically sound, creative, smart and has a knack for scoring goals from in and around the box. Ruben Amorim already has a plethora of options now who can operate as No.10s in his 3-4-2-1 system, which makes it bizarre about the club tabling a big bid already for Fermin’s signing.

United do need a mobile No.6 to plug their gaps in midfield, and not another creative attacker in the shape of Fermin.
