Manchester United will still make a move for Conor Gallagher in the January transfer window

Manchester United’s biggest weakness last season was plain to see. The midfield often looked slow, lacked energy and dynamism, and no manager, from Erik ten Hag to Ruben Amorim, was able to find stability. The problem became even more pronounced in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, where players like Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, and Kobbie Mainoo struggled to complement each other.

According to ESPN, the midfield lacked press resistance and ball-carrying ability. The Manchester Evening News added that the club had monitored players such as Carlos Baleba, Joao Gomes, and Angelo Stiller, but no midfield additions were made in the summer. Instead, United invested in their attack, leaving midfield options in doubt.

Conor Gallagher under scrutiny

Fichajes reports that Conor Gallagher has not fully settled at Atlético de Madrid. The English midfielder was brought in for his energy and work ethic, but inconsistent performances have prevented him from cementing a regular starting role. As a result, he is now being linked with a return to the Premier League, with Manchester United leading the chase ahead of January.

United tried to sign Gallagher last summer, making a deadline-day bid that ultimately failed amid competition from Tottenham. However, their interest has not faded. The club will now look to revive the move in January, whether through a permanent deal or a loan with an option to buy.

Atlético, meanwhile, are said to be open to his departure, which would free up both squad space and finances. Gallagher has shown flashes of quality, but reports suggest he has not fully adapted to Diego Simeone’s style of play. His future will remain in the headlines, and Old Trafford could well be his next destination.

What should be the next step?

This deal looks realistic, particularly after United sold players in the summer to create space for reinforcements. The fact that United pursued Gallagher until the final days of the last window proves there was already a place for him in Amorim’s plans. Atlético were also prepared to sanction a sale, meaning the conditions for a move have long been in place.

Amorim is seeking a midfielder who can run tirelessly, recover the ball quickly, and contribute at both ends of the pitch. Gallagher’s athleticism and relentless energy fit that profile perfectly. While his long passing may not always be precise enough for Amorim’s tactical demands, his ability to cover ground and press aggressively could prove invaluable at Old Trafford.

If he joins, Amorim could deploy the 26-year-old in a box-to-box role. Gallagher would not only add defensive cover but also help United transition quickly into attack. With Amorim’s philosophy based on high pressing, his aggression and work rate could inject much-needed intensity into the side. The key question will be whether he can establish himself as a starter immediately.

Currently, United’s midfield core is built around Casemiro, Ugarte, and Bruno Fernandes, but this trio often lacks pace and consistency. Gallagher, with his energy and hard work, could form an effective partnership with a progressive player like Mainoo, who has so far been underused by Amorim.

In the end, the move may be bold, but it looks necessary. United badly need fresh legs and new energy in midfield and Gallagher could be the perfect fit to fill that void.
