Manchester United legend concerned over prospect's future

Kobbie Mainoo is yet to feature for Manchester United this season. He's been an unused substitute in both of the club's games to begin the new Premier League season. And while he was a standout of the Erik Ten Hag era, Mainoo has started just 15 matches under Ruben Amorim.

During a recent episode of the "Gary Neville Podcast," the former United defender shared his concern for Mainoo's future with United.

"‘I would have liked to have thought that Mainoo could step up and be that person, but it is quite clear that at this moment in time Ruben Amorim isn’t having him," Neville said."...He starts with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, he then puts Mason Mount back in there and he then brings Ugarte on in front of hi m. That tells you he is almost fourth choice really."

Mainoo is a homegrown talent, having come through United's development system. He's got all the attributes to potentially push for a spot on the England team in the future. However, he's struggled to break into Amorim's plans, with Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Mason Mount all ahead of him in United's midfield depth chart.

If Amorim isn't convinced that Mainoo can make an impact for United, he should be sold to raise funds. United's board has clearly committed to rebuilding the squad in Amorim's vision. He needs an athletic midfielder who can dominate on the ball and cover space. Mainoo would undoubtedly attract sizeable offers from teams in England and abroad.

Another option would be a loan deal, which would likely be better for Mainoo. He's still a high-level young talent. Sending him somewhere to get consistent minutes could allow him to progress to a point where Amorim is more inclined to lean on him moving forward.

Whatever United decides to do, it has until Sept. 1 before the summer transfer window closes.
