Tonight saw Kobbie Mainoo take to the pitch in the latter half of Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Wolves, replacing Casemiro in the 77th minute.
This marked Mainoo’s tenth Premier League appearance this season, averaging at only 18 minutes per game, a stark contrast to last year or even the year before.
Two years ago, Mainoo broke into the first squad, grabbing three goals and an assist in 24 Premier League games, averaging 80 minutes per game and even scored one of the vital goals to win the FA Cup.
However, Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford begun the former England international’s downfall, seeing him only play 25 Premier League games, averaging at 66 minutes per game.
As such, it’s abundantly clear to everyone that Ruben Amorim does not consider Mainoo in his squad, despite recent comments that he regards him as a starter like all the others.
These comments were quickly picked up by Paul Scholes who lashed out against Amorim on social media.
Now, before the Wolves clash, Scholes backed up his comments, despite having deleted them, with Nicky Butt agreeing that Mainoo needs to leave Old Trafford for his own good.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes commented: “Kobbie Mainoo, he [Ruben Amorim] said he’s a starter. He’s made nine appearances in the Premier League, every one of them as a sub.”
Adding to this, Nicky Butt commented: “If I’m looking after Kobbie Mainoo, I’m saying ‘ Kobbie, we’re getting you out of that football club.”
He continued: “‘You don’t need to speak up, we’ll sort it out.’
“It’s sad, for his football career, he has to leave Man United. He’s lost 18 months of development.”
In response to this, Paddy McGuniess queried if Mainoo should stay in the Premier League or do like Scott McTominay and move abroad.
Butt very quickly jumped in to respond “I hope he goes abroad, because it’s embarrassing if he goes to Chelsea, which they might go and get him.
He continued: “Because they are putting together a very good young squad, and they keep buying young players and they keep buying the right good young players.
“And you’re thinking ‘He could quite easily end up at Chelsea next season.'”
However, Pauls Scholes added: “And you know what, you’d have to advise him to go wouldn’t you?”
He continued: “If he rang me today and said ‘look, I think Chelsea are in for me, what do you think?’ f*** all day long.”
Butt went on to discuss his long-standing relationship with Kobbie Mainoo, having known the midfielder through the United academy since the age of seven.
However, where the legendary midfielder has advised other youngsters to stick it out with United, Butt expressed he wouldn’t be doing Mainoo justice to advise the same.
It’s already well known that Mainoo has requested a loan-spell away from Old Trafford to get more minutes on the pitch, a request which was declined.
However, if things continue, we could see Mainoo follow in the paths of Alejandro Garnacho and Scott McTominay and leave the club for a new chance elsewhere.
“If Chelsea came in for him, I’d tell him to go!”
