Following a disappointing end to the season, Manchester United narrowly missed out on a trophy, which would have put them in the history books.
The inaugural competition, a seven-a-side ‘grand slam’ style tournament, was won by Bayern Munich in May 2025, before San Diego Wave came on top in the USA edition in December 2025.
Manchester United’s women’s side, led by Marc Skinner despite doubts over his future, met Chelsea in the final on Saturday, May 30. The winner of the match would become the first British side to win the tournament, but the Blues came on top in the thirty-minute game.
Inside 11 minutes, United were already 4-1 up, and it looked as if the trophy was going to be theirs. But with 23 seconds left to play, Chelsea completed their comeback to win 6-5.
It was the final with the most goals in World Sevens’ short history, and United ended the tournament as leading scorers with 27 goals.
Despite losing out in the end, United will take home $250,000 in prize money, a great sum for the club. Their players will now get the chance to rest after a gruelling season in which they missed out on Champions League qualification.
It wasn’t the most serious of tournaments, with players going viral on social media for eccentric walkouts and jokey interactions with opposition and referees.
Had they won the World Sevens London competition, which was entirely held at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, United would have doubled their money and won $500,000, but it just wasn’t to be.
It remains to be seen where the future of Manchester United’s women’s side lies. Be it with under-fire Marc Skinner or not, the club is seriously backing its side to keep progressing.
Before long, United will hope to be WSL title contenders after a fast rise since their promotion to the top flight in 2018/19.
