Manchester United have submitted an opening bid for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo to quickly secure the deal early this summer. United are prioritising the attacking department during the summer window to build a squad that can operate under Ruben Amorim.
Last season, United’s squad that manager Amorim inherited from Erik ten Hag failed to adapt to the new tactical demands. Many of these players have struggled with inconsistencies long before the Red Devils appointed Amorim as the club’s new manager.
Man United finished 16th in the Premier League, well below their stature in England, and lost the Europa League final. United cannot afford to let this situation become a new norm, despite facing a lot of financial issues right now.
Prioritising the attacking department is a clear sign of premeditated strategy by the club, as they cannot wait to recruit. Many top rival clubs have an attacking player as their priority, and losing out to them could cause problems ahead.
United have vulnerabilities in many other areas, which they will sort out after raising funds by selling the surplus players. Man United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, agreeing to a structure of payment over two years.
According to The Athletic, United have submitted an opening bid of £45m plus £10m in add-ons (£55m) for Brentford star Mbeumo. However, the submitted offer is well below the fee that Brentford desire to sell their 25-year-old prolific star this summer.
Earlier reports suggest that Brentford are holding on to a transfer offer of around £60m to let Mbeumo leave. The Cameroon international made 42 appearances in all competitions for Brentford last season, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists.
While the combined fee for both Cunha and Mbeumo could potentially exceed £100m, the deal will immensely strengthen the attacking department. United’s recruitment policy is still up for debate as they have not sold any surplus players yet. At the same time, the on-loan players like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony, who are not part of Amorim’s plan, have also returned for now.
