Manchester United are still picking themselves up after their recent Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
After losing the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg 3-2 at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s women tried to fight back in Germany, scoring an 11-minute goal by Melvine Malard.
However, two goals in three minutes saw Bayern take the lead in the final moments of the game, leaving United without an answer.
Unfortunately, this ended Marc Skinner’s side’s debut run in the tournament, missing out on any further revenue from the further stages.
According to correspondence from UEFA, reaching the semi-finals would have seen United earn an extra £217,750 (€250,000).
Should they have beaten either Real Madrid or Barcelona in the semi-finals, heading on to face Arsenal, Wolfsburg or Lyon in the final, United would have cashed in an extra £479,050 (€550,000).
However, if they’d have come off on top, beating Arsenal or taking revenge on Lyon or Wolfsburg after they beat Skinner’s side in the group stage, the winners’ prize money would have been £653,250 (€750,000).
As such, United have at least missed out on £479,050 (€550,000), which could have maxed out at £653,250 (€750,000) for winning their debut campaign.
However, it’s not all bad, as their impressive run saw them bring in around £1,189,000 (€1,365,000) for getting through the group stages in sixth and getting as far in to the knockout rounds as they did.
Now the Women’s team are looking to their final three games of the Women’s Super League season as they chase third place to keep their spot in the Champions League for next season.
Currently sat in fourth, drawing on points with Arsenal who have two games in hand, the task looks like a hard one, with the women needing to dig deep and avoid any mistakes on the home straight.
