Manchester United have officially confirmed five contract extensions, offering some positive news amid a turbulent season at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s side have struggled for consistency, with disappointing results, defensive mistakes and uncertainty surrounding several players dominating recent headlines.

United showed encouraging signs during last weekend’s trip to Chelsea, creating numerous opportunities throughout an impressive first half.

Matheus Cunha even had a goal disallowed, but the Red Devils failed to capitalise on their dominance.

Morgan Rogers subsequently opened the scoring before Lisandro Martinez was sent off, with Cole Palmer converting the resulting penalty in a 2-0 defeat.

However, Tuesday’s extraordinary Champions League comeback against AS Roma has provided renewed hope.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, United produced a sensational response, with Bruno Fernandes converting a penalty before Cunha scored twice to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Fernandes remains central to United’s future, although uncertainty surrounds his contract situation.

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, the Portuguese captain recently rejected a proposed extension, with Galatasaray reportedly monitoring his situation.

The development follows months of speculation concerning the midfielder’s future, despite his remarkable contributions under Carrick last season.

While questions remain over Fernandes, United have now confirmed five contract decisions elsewhere at the club.

Manchester United officially trigger five contract extensions

According to Manchester United’s official website, five Women’s team players have had their one-year contract extensions activated.

Mared Griffiths, Dominique Janssen, Lucy Newell, Anna Sandberg and Julia Zigiotti are now contracted until the end of the 2027/28 season.

Head coach Eva Olid confirmed the decisions during Friday’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s Women’s Super League clash against Aston Villa.

Janssen and Zigiotti have started all eight league matches this season, while Sandberg has started seven.

Zigiotti is United’s leading WSL scorer, while Griffiths has scored six times in the Subway Players Cup.

Academy graduate Newell also made her senior debut against Durham in September.

Olid, whose appointment was confirmed in August, explained that retaining talented players and positive personalities is essential to the team’s development.

The announcement comes with United Women unbeaten in ten matches across all competitions.
