Manchester United have added to their silverware for the season with the winning of this campaign’s Academy Plate.
United had previously lost out on the Under-18s Premier League Cup to Crystal Palace, following a period of extra time and penalties.
Darren Fletcher’s side had took the lead in that game but Palace brought it back, seeing the Eagles take home the trophy.
Whilst the Under-18s were unsuccessful in their efforts for silverware, Manchester United’s Under-14s won the Premier League Shield in a nine-goal thriller over Liverpool.
That game had helped to show supporters that the depth of the United academy is deep, with this talent arguably essential if the club are to continue succeeding in the future.
The winning of this latest trophy, the Academy Plate, however, has helped to demonstrate both the depth of the academy as well as the promising talent present in the women’s side of the academy.
It was earned by Manchester United’s Under-21s following a 2-1 victory over Durham with goals from Martha A and Sienna Wareing securing the victory for the team.
Manchester United’s Under-21s previously won the same competition last season with a continuation of success helping to suggest the wealth of talent that is in the academy.
Matt Johnson, the club’s Director of Women’s Football, reacted to the victory on the club’s official website stating: “Manchester United is built on a legacy of youth and we are proud of our girls Academy programme.
“Playing in finals is an important part of the players development and it was great to see them perform so well and win silverware.”
Having a huge wealth of talent in the academy, as shown through this victory, could help Marc Skinner as he aims for success with the women’s side.
This latest victory may have caught the attention of the manager and could help some players to earn call-ups to the first team in the coming weeks.
