Manchester United pins hopes on Europa League amid disastrous season

Manchester United’s 2024-25 campaign has been nothing short of a disaster. Sitting 14th in the Premier League with just nine wins from 27 matches, the club is enduring one of its worst seasons in modern history.

A negative goal difference of -6 highlights its struggles at both ends of the pitch, and with its domestic prospects scattered, its hopes rest on success in Europe.

For manager Ruben Amorim, the pressure is mounting. Since taking charge in November, the Portuguese coach has failed to inspire a significant turnaround. United is on the brink of recording its worst Premier League finish, and another defeat in the coming weeks would make Amorim the fastest manager in club history to suffer 10 league losses.

His tactical approach has faced increasing scrutiny, while tensions with key players — most notably Marcus Rashford, who has since joined Aston Villa on loan — have only added to the turmoil. Many speculate that Amorim’s training methods and man-management style have not resonated with certain senior players, further complicating an already fractured dressing room.

Off the pitch, financial concerns add another layer of urgency. The club faces a growing deficit reportedly exceeding £100 million, exacerbated by early domestic cup exits and the looming loss of Champions League revenue.

The club’s commercial strength remains a pillar of financial stability, but a prolonged absence from Europe’s elite competition could have long-term consequences. Winning the Europa League is not just a matter of pride but a financial necessity, offering a potential lifeline both competitively and commercially.

On the European stage, United has fared better, scoring 12 goals in the competition so far. Striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has struggled domestically with just seven league goals, has found form in Europe, netting five times in eight matches. Bruno Fernandes, while inconsistent in the league, remains United’s creative heartbeat in continental fixtures, and his leadership will be crucial in the upcoming Round of 16 clash against Real Sociedad.

With daunting league fixtures ahead, including matches against Arsenal and Manchester City, United’s Europa League campaign has become its last remaining chance to salvage something from the wreckage. Anything less than lifting the trophy could make this one of the club’s most forgettable seasons in recent memory.
