Michael Carrick’s Manchester United squad have been making the most of their reduced schedule this week, as The Red Devils failed to secure European football this season.
Under Ruben Amorim, United’s senior men’s team failed to retain their Europa League spot or upgrade to the Champions League, and are also out of both domestic cups too.
However, the same can’t be said for Marc Skinner’s Women’s team as they keep marching on in their debut UEFA Women’s Champions League season.
Securing their spot in the illustrious competition for the first time, the United Women’s team progressed through the league stage with four wins and two losses.
Bagging their place in the knock-out round, Manchester United beat Valerenga, Atletico Madrid, PSG and Juventus, booking them a rematch against Atletico Madrid in the knock-out playoffs.
However, the Red Devils improved on their 1-0 win in the group stages, recording a 3-0 win away from home and a 2-0 win at home for an aggregate score of 5-0.
Tonight’s game at the Progress with Unity Stadium saw goals from Julia Zigiotti Olme and Jess Park to get the the women through to the next stage.
Opening the scoring, Olme linked up with Lisa Naalsund who cut in from the left to lay off the first-time shot, beating Madrid keeper Lola Gallardo in the 28th minute.
Then in the 41st mintue, Park bent in a stunning strike from the edge of the box during a corner routine, making it 2-0.
Now, Skinner’s side are set to face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals who they are yet to face in the competions so far.
Their only losses have come to Wolfsburg and Olympique Lyonnais, when they lost 5-2 and 3-0 respectively, with both sides also prgressing to the quarter-finals.
Manchester United’s Women’s team are one of three English sides through to the next stage, with Chelsea and Arsenal also getting through.
