Manchester United are ready to cut ties with Jadon Sancho

Manchester United had a long summer transfer window in terms of incomings as well as outgoings. And the Jadon Sancho situation was one of those things that grabbed a lot of headlines at Old Trafford.

And the Premiership heavyweights are set to give away the England international on a free transfer when the next summer comes around after the wide forward sealed a loan transfer to Aston Villa for the 2025/26 season.

United look at Sancho as ‘sunk cost’

The former Dortmund winger moved to Villa Park in a late deadline-day transfer where the Birmingham-based side agreed to take up 80% of his reported £300k-per-week wages. That being said, no loan fee was paid. And United are not likely to get back even a penny of that massive £73m that the club paid to sign him in 2021.

The 25-year-old has his contract at Old Trafford due next summer. And as his deal at M16 comes to its conclusion, many expect him to be released from the books at Carrington at the end of the campaign, with the latest report from Football Insider suggesting that United have accepted his situation as a sunk cost.

Sancho didn’t quite find his feet at United

Sancho arrived at Old Trafford in a highly anticipated move, especially given how he had put in splendid performances in the German top tier. But he quite failed to come anywhere near to the expectations with which he was signed at M16.

The Man City graduate has only scored 12 goals donning that United badge. Moreover, he never quite found his place in the starting eleven. We saw a sense of possible revival last season when he was playing at Stamford Bridge. But Chelsea didn’t take up the £25m option to attain his signatures despite a bit of negotiation.

Author Opinion

Let’s be honest, Sancho isn’t the only player who has failed with marquee moves to Old Trafford. If we are looking at the recent past, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund are a couple of other names who made a high-profile move to Premier League heavyweights but ended up not making the most out of it. Antony is also another of those who struggled at United, but the Brazilian has found his feet at Real Betis after he chose a move to the Spanish giants over Bayern Munich.

For Sancho now, Aston Villa will be an opportunity for him to regain his confidence. And barring a dramatic one-eighty in his form, it looks like he is out of Ruben Amorim’s plans at Old Trafford.
