Manchester United may be focused on strengthening Michael Carrick’s squad ahead of a demanding season that includes Champions League football, but former players continue to remain close to the hearts of supporters.
The Reds have already seen several current and former stars make headlines during the international break, with World Cup preparations now taking centre stage across the globe.
Carrick’s side are expected to be active in the transfer market over the coming weeks as INEOS look to build on a campaign that ended with a third-place Premier League finish.
While attention at Old Trafford is largely on recruitment, worrying news emerged involving a former United midfielder over the weekend.
Christian Eriksen was involved in a frightening incident while representing Denmark in a friendly against Ukraine.
The experienced midfielder suddenly collapsed off the ball during the second half of the match, prompting immediate concern from players and medical staff.
Denmark’s players quickly formed a protective circle around Eriksen as medics rushed onto the pitch to assist him.
Although the scenes were alarming, there was immediate relief when Chrisitian Eriksen was able to get back to his feet and walk towards an ambulance under his own power.
With Denmark leading 2-1 at the time, officials decided to bring the match to an early conclusion as attention shifted entirely towards the player’s wellbeing.
A short time later, Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen provided an update that eased fears.
Boesen said, “Christian [Eriksen] is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.
“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.
“But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.“
The incident inevitably brought back memories of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s European Championship clash with Finland in 2021.
Following that life-threatening event, the midfielder was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, a device that acts as both a pacemaker and a mini-defibrillator.
Manchester United, where Eriksen spent two successful years before departing the club, also released a statement after learning of the incident.
The club said: “Everybody at Manchester United is encouraged by Denmark’s update on Christian Eriksen following Sunday’s abandoned friendly against Ukraine.
The club is sending strength and love to Christian and the Eriksen family as we await further news.”
For now, the football world will simply be hoping Eriksen’s hospital examinations provide positive results and that the former United midfielder makes a full recovery.
