Manchester United reportedly ready to battle Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappe in 2022

Two of Europe's most successful clubs may end up in a battle for Kylian Mbappe's services come 2022.

According to ESPN's Rob Dawson and Julien Laurens, Manchester United have identified Mbappe as a future transfer target and are exploring the possibility of making a move for the Paris Saint-Germain star next summer.

United's biggest competition will be Real Madrid, which have been heavily linked to the French international this summer. ESPN reports that Mbappe prefers a move to Real Madrid, so a move to Old Trafford would be difficult.

El Chiringuito's Josep Pedrerol reported earlier this week that Mbappe would request a transfer to Real Madrid in a private meeting with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. It's unclear if he has already done so.

However, United are interested in adding another forward in 2022 in case Edinson Cavani leaves after his contract expires next summer, ESPN adds. As such, they could be big players in the Mbappe sweepstakes.

Mbappe is expected to remain in Paris through the 2021-22 season. A team can sign him on a free transfer in a year if he doesn't renew with the Parisians.

Along with Mbappe, United could potentially target Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Lautaro Martinez next year.

Mbappe has spent his last five seasons with Paris Saint-Germain after beginning his career with AS Monaco. He led Ligue 1 in scoring last season with 27 goals in 31 games.
