Manchester United rival Juventus for Bologna centre-back

Manchester United’s summer recruitment has already strengthened several areas of Michael Carrick’s squad, but defensive planning remains active.

Although the Reds technically have five senior centre-backs available, the situation is not as straightforward as it appears.

Matthijs de Ligt continues his recovery after undergoing back surgery in May, leaving United to assess whether another experienced defender is needed before the transfer window closes.

That search has now led the club to Serie A.

Manchester United tracking Bologna defender

According to Corriere dello Sport, Manchester United have emerged as one of the clubs interested in Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, with the Premier League side now joining Juventus in the race for the Colombian international.

Jhon Lucumi has developed into one of the most dependable defenders in Italian football over the last few seasons and is widely expected to leave Bologna during this transfer window.

His contract runs until the summer of 2027, but Bologna have already accepted that an exit is possible under the right circumstances.

Speaking this week, Bologna CEO Claudio Fenucci admitted the club are prepared to honour an agreement with the player.

“We promised to let him leave during this transfer window, but only if a suitable offer were to arrive.

“We haven’t received one yet, but if that happens, we’ll make it happen. Otherwise, he’ll stay in Bologna.”

Juventus have already tested Bologna’s resolve.

The Turin club reportedly submitted an offer worth €18 million for the defender in recent weeks, but it was rejected by the Rossoblu.

Manchester United’s involvement has now complicated matters further, with the Red Devils described as a dangerous rival in the race for the 27-year-old.

Lucumi’s €28 million release clause expired on 15 July, meaning any transfer will now require direct negotiations with Bologna.

The Colombian also enhanced his reputation on the international stage this summer, featuring in five World Cup matches for his country during the tournament.

While United still have Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven available, De Ligt’s lengthy rehabilitation has left the club evaluating whether additional cover is required before the new season begins.
