Manchester United and Liverpool are preparing to renew one of English football’s biggest rivalries later this year, with the men’s sides set to meet at Anfield in November.

Michael Carrick’s United have endured a poor opening to the Premier League season, taking five points from their first five matches after a win over Ipswich, draws against Everton and Fulham and defeats to Hull City and Manchester City.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have made an unbeaten start under new head coach Andoni Iraola, taking nine points from their opening five league matches.

The Reds have won twice and drawn three times, with their latest victory coming against Bournemouth before the international break.

The two clubs will not meet again in the men’s game until November, but their rivalry is already set to take centre stage elsewhere this weekend.

Manchester United Women will play their 250th match since their 2018 reformation when Liverpool visit the Progress With Unity Stadium on Saturday.

The landmark fixture has an added sense of symmetry because Liverpool were United’s first opponents after the women’s team was reformed.

United travelled to Prenton Park on 19 August 2018 and marked their return with a 1-0 victory, Lizzie Arnot scoring the winner late in the game.

Almost eight years later, the two sides will meet again.

Saturday’s game will be the 14th meeting between the clubs, according to United’s website, placing Liverpool among the most frequently faced opponents since the team’s return.

The Reds have won several of the recent encounters, including a 3-1 WSL victory in February, but United also recorded a 2-0 win at Liverpool earlier in the 2025/26 season.

United head into the milestone match having finally secured their first WSL victory of the season last weekend, beating West Ham 2-1 after drawing 1-1 with Arsenal and suffering defeats against London City Lionesses and Chelsea.

They have also scored 15 goals across their last two cup matches, beating Sheffield United 10-1 before Wednesday’s 5-1 victory over Durham.

Liverpool have also made a solid start under Gareth Taylor, collecting seven points from their opening four league matches.

They opened with a 4-0 victory over Charlton, drew 1-1 with Tottenham, lost 4-2 to Manchester City and then responded by beating Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby.

The Reds also come into the meeting after a midweek cup victory, beating Birmingham City 4-3 in the Subway Players Cup.

With both teams carrying positive momentum into Saturday’s meeting, United’s landmark occasion promises to be more than simply a celebration of the club’s progress since 2018.
