Manchester United have some serious decisions to make in the coming weeks on which direction they intend to take the squad in. So far, with the exception of Matheus Cunha, there has been no other significant moves and with less than a month to go for the new season, that is concerning.

Ruben Amorim will understand the importance of making a solid start this year as he has a lot of detractors to prove wrong. The Portuguese tactician had an excellent stint with Sporting CP but his time at Old Trafford so far has been quite poor for a variety of reasons.

It remains to be seen who Man Utd go for in whatever time is remaining this summer. Now, as per Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have set their sights on talented Brazilian centre-back Lucas Beraldo who is currently playing for PSG.’

Lucas Beraldo was integral to PSG

The young 21-year-old defender joined the Parisians from Sau Paulo in 2023 and played a pivotal role in his club’s quadruple winning season. Although not always the first name on the team sheet for Luis Enrique, Beraldo impressed with his composure whenever given the opportunity.

The report mentions that United are aware of Beraldo’s contractual situation, with a deal that runs for another three years but want to secure his signature this summer. Amorim’s system uses three centre-backs and the Brazilian would be a good fit into the outside left centre-back role.

Not a necessary reinforcement

That said, arguably the only position in the squad that Man Utd are relatively comfortable with is the central defence. Amorim has the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Ayden Heaven to depend on and he doesn’t need a reinforcement in this area.

Six players for three positions is more than enough depth through the course of a season and when there are much more pressing needs to address, the last thing Man Utd can afford to do is spend a significant chunk of their purse on the 21-year-old Champions League winner.

That said, the Red Devils have always made decisions that do not make sense, especially in recent years. Thus, it would be absolutely no surprise if they ended up signing a new central defender this summer and let’s wait and see how it plays out in the coming weeks with regards to Beraldo.
