Manchester United pulled through the 2024/25 season somehow. They relived one of the worst periods in history by finishing 15th in the Premier League. Despite reaching the Europa League final, the defeat to Tottenham took away our last hope. Staying out of European competitions for the next season is nothing less than a nightmare. The arrival of Ruben Amorim in the middle of the previous season brought some balance, but it was too late. Now the club want some solid changes before the start of the 2025/26 season.
The signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have made the summer start a little brighter. Trusting a youngster like Diogo Leon also seems to be part of the future plan. However, there is still a lot of work to be done. Casemiro’s waning body and Christian Eriksen’s departure from the club have weakened the midfield depth. Manuel Ugarte has also not been able to make any significant impact so far. In such a situation, the search for a new midfield motor is on.
Now, we will take a look at one of the options that we are looking for to reinforce the midfield. Fichajes report says that Manchester United are showing interest in Sevilla’s 23-year-old midfielder Lucien Agoume. He has consistently performed well in La Liga. Balance, calmness and clarity of passing are clearly visible in his playing style. The report states that United are keeping an eye on his situation. At the same time, Arsenal also wants the French midfielder, and hence, the competition will not be easy.
Agoume has a good range of passing, he can distribute the ball well on both flanks. His defensive positioning is strong, and he can also speed up the attack by moving forward quickly in transitions. Despite the midfielder’s young age, he shows maturity on the field. In Amorim’s system where two midfielders are necessary, having a player like Agoume can be very beneficial.
We think Lucien Agoume could fit into Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. Eriksen is gone, Casemiro is tired and at the twilight of his career, and Mount’s fitness is always in question. Agoume could be given a central role. Amorim has time to rebuild the team, and the Frenchman could add pace to his system. If Ugarte doesn’t bring stability, players like Agoume will become a necessity.
The big question is – will the 23-year-old say yes to Old Trafford? He has found stability at Sevilla, but the name Manchester United are still a huge inspiration. If he likes Amorim’s vision, project and is given the trust, he might take up the challenge. We think it’s time for United to bring in a midfielder who plays now and has a future. Agoume has that potential and can fit into that role. Now, it remains to be seen if United do come up with an official bid for the player.
