A piece of Manchester United history is being sold at auction, after former manager Sir Matt Busby gave a private vendor permission to take it in 1992.
It’s just one of the latest parts of one of the world’s most famous football clubs being sold for a meteoric amount.
And the sign isn’t the only part of Manchester United history being sold at this specific auction.
A sign that used to hang on Old Trafford’s famous Stretford End has been put up for auction, as reported by the BBC.
The stadium sign, which was removed in 1992, spells out “Manchester United”, in huge 3ft (91cm) high letters, as well as 12 smaller letters that spell out “football club”.
Graham Budd auctioneers, who are selling the sign, said former manager and club legend Sir Matt Busby had given the private vendor permission to take it when it was removed from Old Trafford’s famous Stretford End in 1992.
The sign will have only climbed in value since, as such a relic as part of a stadium that could be torn down in the next few years, with Manchester United confirming funding for a proposed new 100,000 seater stadium.
A pair of Cristiano Ronaldo’s golden boots, which the Portuguese phenomenon threw in a bin after training while a player at Manchester United, are also being sold for a guide price of £15,000.
Graham Budd Auctioneers said the gold Nike Vapor boots were “retrieved” by cleaner Tony Heywood “from the bin after a training session,” after Ronaldo wore them in 2004.
Heywood must have known the boots were going to be worth quite a bit of money one day, given the haste to keep the cleats worn by a player who went on to become one of football’s best.
Both items will be sold under the hammer at an auction in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, on 28 April, in a day set to be filled with United fans who are after their own pieces of history.
