Uncertainty around several positions at Old Trafford means Manchester United’s recruitment team have been scanning the European market for players capable of raising the technical level of the squad.

The left side of the pitch has become a particularly interesting area of discussion.

Several options have been debated internally as the club prepares for the summer window.

One name that has emerged strongly in those conversations plays his football in Italy and has built a reputation as one of the most productive left-sided players in Europe.

That player is Federico Dimarco.

Sources suggest Manchester United regard the Italy international as an elite option on the left flank and could make an approach when the transfer window opens.

Testing the waters over a potential deal is considered likely, although convincing his current club to negotiate would be another challenge entirely.

Serie A leaders Inter Milan currently view the 28-year-old as untouchable and have made it clear they would prefer to extend his stay rather than discuss a transfer.

Inter’s plan is to offer Federico Dimarco a new long-term contract running until 2030 along with a sizeable wage increase to reward his importance to the team.

His current agreement does not expire until June 2027, but the club are keen to secure his future sooner rather than later.

Should talks over fresh terms fail to progress, the situation could suddenly become much more interesting for clubs monitoring developments.

Manchester United are believed to be among the sides keeping a close watch on how negotiations unfold.

Because of Dimarco’s age profile, United would reportedly aim to open negotiations at around £38 million (€45 million), as reported by Football Transfers.

However, if a genuine opportunity appeared, the club could be prepared to push the figure closer to £51 million (€60 million).

Despite the growing attention, prising him away from Inter would be extremely complicated for emotional as well as sporting reasons.

Dimarco was born in Milan and grew up supporting the Nerazzurri, joining the club’s academy as a youngster.

Although he briefly left in 2017 when he was sold to FC Sion, Inter quickly brought him back just a year later.

Loan spells with Parma Calcio 1913 and Hellas Verona helped him mature before he finally cemented his place in the Inter starting lineup in the 2021/22 campaign.

Since then, the Italian international has developed into one of the most dangerous attacking wing-backs in the game.

This season alone he has produced seven goals and fifteen assists in thirty-six appearances across all competitions.

Those numbers underline exactly why Manchester United believe he could transform the left side of their team.
