Manchester United are understood to be stepping up their attempts to sign long-term target Ederson from Atalanta.

The Red Devils have been linked with the midfielder since January 2024, having kept an eye on the 26-year-old for over two years now.

This summer United are rebuilding their midfield, saying goodbye to Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, looking to replace both and sign another midfielder for further squad depth.

As such, £150 million has been set aside for the three new signings, with £80 million to replace Casemiro, £50 million for Ugarte’s replacement and the £20 million left for another signing.

Now, United are understood to be ramping up their pursuit of Ederson, despite him agreeing terms to join Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Manchester United plot to beat Atletico Madrid to Ederson

Alfredo Pedula has reported that The Red Devils are set to have talks for the deal next week as they plot to steal the midfielder from Atletico for £34.6 million (€40 million).

It’s understood that while Atletico Madrid have agreed personal terms with the 26-year-old, their bid has come in £8.65 million (€10 million) under Atalanta’s asking price.

Recently, there has been speculation over United also using Joshua Zirkzee as a bargaining chip in a swap-deal to beat Atletico to their man, with the former Bologna striker looking set to return to Italy.

However, signs from Atletico are suggesting that they aren’t looking to fight for the midfield, as they have turned their attention elsewhere.

The Spanish side are understood to be looking at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ star Joao Gomes as he looks for a new club following Wolves’ relegation to the Championship.

United were also linked with Gomes as another potential midfield option, however, with Atletico understood to be tabling a £39 million (€45 million) offer to Wolves, they are seemingly more keen for him than keeping in the race for Ederson.

As such, this could well have strengthened United’s position in negotiating for Ederson, helping them move in on one of their three summer signings for midfield.
