Highlights

  • Manchester United vs Sunderland is a must win for Ruben Amorim.
  • Manager could be fired if loses the game.
  • Sunderland could jump to the top of the table.

Manchester United and Sunderland will face off in the 7th round of the 2025/26 Premier League season at Old Trafford. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET, on Saturday, October 4.

At first glance, this might look like an easy matchup for the Red Devils. But it could mark the end of Ruben Amorim’s era at the club—not only because this has been one of the worst starts to a season in United’s history, but also because the timing would give the team a window to appoint an interim head coach.

After this round, players will join their national teams, meaning there will be no domestic competition games for the next week and a half. If Manchester United lose to Sunderland, a newly promoted side from the Championship, and do so at home, things could get much uglier for Amorim.

There’s already a growing number of fans and pundits who believe the best move for the directors is to fire Amorim and bring in a replacement. While Manchester United historically avoids sacking coaches before they’ve had at least a season and a half, this situation could become a new case study for the Red Devils.

Sunderland, on the other hand, is playing to win. If they manage to pull off an upset at Old Trafford, they would climb to 13 points, surpass Crystal Palace for third place, and match Arsenal’s record so far.

Expected Starting Lineups

Manchester United

  • Goalkeeper: A. Bayindir
  • Defenders: L. Yoro, M. de Ligt, L. Shaw
  • Midfielders: A. Diallo, Casemiro, B. Fernandes, P. Dorgu
  • Wingers: B. Mbeumo, M. Cunha
  • Forward: B. Sesko

The only player in the rotation who will miss the game is Noussair Mazraoui. Lisandro Martínez also won’t be available for Ruben Amorim, as he’s still recovering from the injury suffered last season. On the other hand, Amad Diallo could make his return in this match.

Sunderland

  • Goalkeeper: R. Roefs
  • Defenders: T. Hume, N. Makiele, O. Alderete, A. Masuaku
  • Midfielders: G. Xhaka, C. Rigg, N. Sadiki
  • Wingers: E. Lé Fée, C. Talbi
  • Forward: W. Insidor

Sunderland has a long list of absentees. Habib Diarra, Leo Fuhr Hjelde, Romaine Mundle, and Dennis Cirkin are all out with injuries, while Reinildo Mandava is suspended. The only good news is that Ajubola-Joshua Alese is listed as doubtful for the match, giving him a chance to feature.
