Manchester United's Harry Maguire to be 'rested on compassionate terms' vs. Arsenal

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been an online target for criticism and abuse among fans following questionable on-the-pitch performances this season, but the situation took a disturbing turn earlier this week when police were called to his home because of a bomb threat taken seriously by Maguire and his family.

A spokesperson said on Thursday that Maguire planned "to prepare for this weekend’s fixture as normal" as he and United readied themselves for Saturday's match against Arsenal. However, The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell reported Friday that United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is now preparing to drop Maguire from the starting lineup for Saturday's pivotal clash in the battle for the top four spots in the Premier League table and a berth in next season's UEFA Champions League competition.

Maguire, 29, struggled during this past Tuesday's 4-0 thrashing at the hands of rivals Liverpool and is now reportedly set "to be rested on compassionate terms." His status as a substitute this weekend isn't clear.

Whitwell adds that Maguire now has an added security presence around him following the bomb threat. He lives with his fiancee and their two children.

"No evacuations took place, but as a precautionary measure a police explosives dog has attended the address this afternoon, Thursday, 21 April, to conduct a search of the gardens and surrounding area," Cheshire Police explained on Thursday.

Arsenal head into the weekend fifth in the league table on 57 points, level with North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur but trailing on goal difference. United are sixth on 54 points.
