Manchester United's Mason Greenwood 'further arrested' on suspicion of sexual assault, threats to kill

The legal situation involving Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has taken another disturbing turn. 

Greenwood was suspended by the club and later arrested on Sunday after accusations that he raped and abused a woman appeared on social media, and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed on Monday the 20-year-old remained in custody for further questioning. Per Sky Sports, GMP offered an update on the matter via an official statement on Tuesday. 

"Detectives have been granted further additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman," GMP explained. "The suspect was detained in custody on Sunday (January 30) afternoon after we became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

"He continues to be questioned after magistrates authorised an extension until tomorrow (Wednesday 2 February). Following enquiries so far, he has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. Enquiries are ongoing and the victim continues to be offered specialist support."

United responded via a brief statement shared on their website: 

"Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind. As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice."

According to Nathan Bliss of the Manchester Evening News, EA Sports has pulled Greenwood from offline modes of its popular "FIFA 22" title across all platforms. 

"Mason Greenwood has been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and has also been suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) packs and Ultimate Draft," an EA Sports spokesperson told that outlet. Bliss adds Greenwood's FUT item is active and can still be traded on the transfer market.

Nike officially suspended its relationship with Greenwood on Monday.
