Manchester United are weighing up options at left-back ahead of a return to European football next season, with squad depth and rotation now a key focus for Michael Carrick’s side.

Luke Shaw remains the established starter, but with a demanding fixture schedule expected, the club are actively assessing potential reinforcements in that area.

At the same time, Chelsea’s turbulent campaign has put several of their players under the spotlight, with the London club finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on all European competition.

That has triggered uncertainty across the squad, with exits now being seriously considered as the Blues look to reshape their squad structure.

One of those players is Marc Cucurella, who has reportedly informed Chelsea that he wants to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after growing frustrated with his situation.

The Spanish international, signed for around £60m from Brighton in 2022, has since become a regular starter, but according to Mundo Deportivo, he now has no intention of continuing in west London and sees his time at the club as ‘completely over’.

While Barcelona are said to be his preferred destination due to his roots in their academy system, interest is also building elsewhere across Europe.

Marc Cucurella monitored by Manchester United

Manchester City and Atletico Madrid are both monitoring developments, but Manchester United are also understood to be closely monitoring his situation as they consider their left-back options.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are reportedly open to a sale, though they would be looking to recoup a fee in the region of €40–50m for the 27-year-old.

With Hansi Flick also said to appreciate the defender, Barcelona’s pursuit may depend on whether Alejandro Balde leaves, while United themselves have already been linked with Balde as part of their wider recruitment planning.

For now, Cucurella’s future looks increasingly uncertain, and United’s interest adds another layer to what could become one of the more surprising transfer battles of the summer window.
