Marcus Rashford has responded after his Instagram message, posted following his England World Cup call-up, drew a backlash from Manchester United fans on Friday.
The forward, currently on loan at Barcelona from United, thanked several clubs and coaches after being named in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
It was not that Rashford said anything negative about United. It was that he did not mention them at all.
For many fans, that silence spoke volumes.
Rashford’s Instagram story included thanks to Unai Emery, Hansi Flick, Tuchel, Aston Villa, Barcelona and England, but not United.
The omission quickly became a talking point, but Rashford later clarified his post, insisting it was “not a dig of any sort”.
That should matter. If Rashford says there was no intent to criticise United, it is reasonable to take him at his word.
That is especially true because he also said he remains a Manchester United supporter.
Intent and impact are not always the same thing. Rashford might not have meant to snub United, but the absence still felt significant.
He made it clear he was thanking those who had supported him over the past 18 months.
That is why the omission stood out. Rashford’s recent journey has taken place outside Old Trafford.
That does not make him wrong. It does highlight how far he has moved from the club where he made his name.
This would not have resonated as strongly if Rashford’s future was already settled. It is not.
He has scored 14 goals for Barcelona this season, but the club have not triggered their £26m option to buy.
Michael Carrick has also confirmed that no decision has been made on Rashford’s future, leaving every public statement open to interpretation.
That is why the reaction was so sharp. It was not just about one Instagram story, but months of uncertainty.
Rashford was right to address the noise. Fans should take his explanation seriously, but they were also right to notice the omission.
Even without intent, the post said something important. Rashford’s career has moved forward, and United are no longer at the centre of it.
