Marc Guiu has had two appearances for Chelsea since his loan to Sunderland was cut short in the summer. Both came off the bench, and he didn’t score in either of them.

Guiu makes an impression at Chelsea in just 60 minutes

But despite that minimal time on the pitch, the forward has made an impression. The first appearance came against Liverpool before the international break, where some pointed out that his movement across the box drew defenders with him as Chelsea attacked down the left in the build up to the winning goal.

It would be overly generous to give him too much credit, but there’s no denying he contributed to the goal, which saw Estevao Willian attacking the space at the far post that Guiu had created.

His impact yesterday was even bigger. Coming on at half time, he led the line and allowed Joao Pedro to drop deeper and create. Multiple pundits, including Alan Shearer on Match of the Day, looked at Guiu and what he did and were very impressed.

He was an obvious choice for a Monday morning column then, and that’s just what Simon Johnson of the Athletic has done. His piece looks at how Guiu has coped since his deadline day return from the North East.

Johnson writes that Guiu went for a private meeting with Maresca after training a few weeks ago “to speak about his lack of games” and “find out if there were things he needed to be do better.”

How Guiu played a part in 3 goals in 2 games

We don’t know exactly what Maresca said, but soon the former Barcelona man got his 16 minutes against the Reds, and on Saturday he got 45 minutes against Nottingham Forest. Things are certainly trending in the right direction.

As well as the bit of movement which contributed to Estevao’s memorable winner, Guiu’s subtle impact was notable in the first two goals on Saturday.

The Blues’ opener saw Josh Acheampong with a free header, but only after Guiu had run to the near post and taken the attentions of various Forest defenders with him. Then he earned the free kick from which Pedro Neto scored the second.
