It was the first press conference of the new season this morning, with Enzo Maresca sitting down to address the upcoming friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, as well as to catch up the press on the events of the summer so far.
The biggest, baddest news was about Levi Colwill. A sure starter and a key player with a year developing in Maresca’s system, he was one of the first names on the teamsheet. But he’s already been hit by injury, as the manager revealed:
“Colwill felt something in the first session and we now need to wait and see,” the coach said.
That’s all the information we have, but the way he said it didn’t look positive, and the fact that there’s a scan to assess the damage is another negative sign. Many Blues fans are already fearing the worst.
A long term injury to Colwill would be a disaster as his natural partner Wesley Fofana is already suffering from an endless series of issues. According to Maresca, he’s almost back for his latest return, but can anyone trust him long term?
“Wes [Fofana] is back, he is training with us. I don’t think he is ready for minutes in the next two games but he can be ready for the Palace game which is good news,” Maresca said.
Even coming back for that Palace game to start the season, we can’t see Fofana being ready to start a Premier League match for some time. If he’s not ready just for a few minutes in the friendlies, he certainly won’t be starting a game a week later.
Hopefully Levi isn’t out long and Fofana is able to stay fit.
