Inter President Beppe Marotta believes that knocking down the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and building a new stadium in San Siro was ‘a necessity, not a choice’, and has given his full support to Nerazzurri head coach Cristian Chivu ahead of Saturday’s Serie A match against Cremonese.

Inter are hosting Cremonese in Serie A in the sixth round of Serie A fixtures on Saturday afternoon, kicking off at 17.00 BST.

Marotta on Chivu and San Siro: ‘A necessity rather than a choice’

Speaking to DAZN ahead of kick-off, Marotta spoke about Inter’s start to the season under new head coach Chivu, and has explained why the Romanian is a perfect fit for the Nerazzurri.

“I don’t know if we’ve got the best football in Italy, but we are playing good football. It’s essential to win, but it’s even better if you win while playing well,” Marotta said (via TMW).

“I believe that every coach has their own identity. Chivu is an excellent coach. He has been through a phase of experimentation. Having balance is always very important.

“He’s an excellent professional, and has Nerazzurri identity.”

Marotta also spoke about the redevelopment of the San Siro site, which will include the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Inter and Milan have agreed to purchase the San Siro site from the city council, who approved the sale at the beginning of the week. It is believed that over 90% of the stadium will be demolished and rebuilt in order to bring it in line with other state-of-the-art venues across Europe.

“We’re going down a new path. The club and city council will play a big role. It was a necessity rather than a choice,” Marotta said about the upcoming redevelopment.
