Inter Miami's midfielder Sergio Busquets surprised the football community by announcing that he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2025 MLS season, which is a few months away.
Busquets has received lots of praise and kind words from former teammates and other football legends after his announcement. A former teammate of his is Javier Mascherano, who is currently Busquets' manager at Inter Miami.
Ahead of Inter Miami's MLS match against Toronto FC, Mascherano gave his first thoughts on Busquets' retirement announcement. Mascherano revealed that the entire Inter Miami team was surprised by his decision.
"He gathered us all and told us, we were surprised. He mentioned it to me yesterday; he had been thinking about it for the last few weeks. It's a shame because he is a player who is still at his peak, and we could continue to enjoy the level he brings," Javier Mascherano said.
While being asked more questions about Busquets' retirement, Mascherano reveals what the Spanish midfielder is planning to do after he officially hangs up his boots.
Mascherano revealed that Sergio Busquets is planning to become a manager in the future. The Inter Miami head coach did not reveal when he would, but did assure that the midfielder is looking at that path.
"Busi is going to be a coach, when, how, and where he will decide himself. I didn’t talk about his future plans, whether to return home or stay here in Miami," said Javier Mascherano.
Busquets has been eyeing the idea of becoming a football manager in the past, according to Mascherano. The Inter Miami head coach was teammates with Sergio Busquets at Barcelona from 2010 to 2018.
"We have talked in the past, and Busquets told me that he will try to become a coach. I don’t know how long it will take, but he has all the qualities," said Javier Mascherano.
