Mason Greenwood’s future has been one of the defining sagas of Marseille’s summer, being chased across Europe after two prolific seasons in Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old joined Marseille permanently in 2024 following his exit from Manchester United, and quickly rebuilt his reputation in France.

His revival had begun a year earlier on loan at Getafe, where a productive season in La Liga restored his standing.

He then returned 48 goals and 17 assists across 81 appearances for Marseille over two seasons, finishing as one of Ligue 1’s most productive forwards.

That output was enough to make him a target for several of Europe’s biggest names once his future at the club came into question.

Now, Fabrizio Romano reports that Greenwood has accepted Fenerbahce’s contract terms until June 2030, giving the Turkish side the green light on a move.

Romano explains that Fenerbahce have agreed everything with the player, whose camp have signed off on the length and terms of the deal.

Reports of friction with Marseille’s coaching staff and hierarchy had opened the door to a sale, with sporting director Gregory Lorenzi sanctioning his departure.

Fenerbahce’s interest first surfaced during the club’s presidential race, when candidate Hakan Safi made Greenwood a centrepiece of his election campaign.

However, Safi lost June’s vote to Aziz Yildirim, and for a time the Turkish route looked to have cooled.

Now, under the new administration, Fenerbahce have returned and won the player over with the offer of Champions League qualifying football and a salary in the region of £6.8 million (€8 million) a year plus bonuses.

That package proved enough to see off the other clubs who had circled the England international this summer.

Romano reports that Atletico Madrid made a series of calls before deciding against escalating their interest, while Roma never lodged a formal offer despite long-standing admiration.

As such, Fenerbahce have gone from a position of doubt to the front of the queue, having tied down the player side of any deal.

The one outstanding piece is the fee, with Marseille and Fenerbahce still in active talks after an official bid worth in excess of £34 million (€40 million).

For Manchester United, a completed sale would trigger the sell-on clause from Greenwood’s 2024 exit, worth a reported £8.5 million to Old Trafford.
