Manchester United are pushing forward in a strong run of form and sitting comfortably among the top sides, but attention has also turned to situations involving former players and potential financial implications.
One of those situations has centred around Mason Greenwood, whose performances abroad have placed him back into the spotlight.
His future has been a talking point in recent months, not just because of his form, but also due to comments made by key figures at his current club.
And now, a major development off the pitch could have a knock-on effect for all parties involved.
Olympique de Marseille have officially confirmed, via their website, that president Pablo Longoria has stepped down after reaching an agreement over his exit conditions.
The Spanish executive, who previously worked at Atalanta, Sassuolo, Juventus and Valencia, joined the French side in 2020 before taking over as president in 2021.
During his time at the club, Longoria played a key role in bringing Mason Greenwood to Marseille and publicly backed the forward amid growing scrutiny around his future.
Speaking earlier this season, Longoria made his stance clear, insisting: “I’m proud of the performances, I’m proud of the personal development he’s having which is important.”
Mason Greenwood has repaid that faith on the pitch, enjoying a productive campaign with 33 goal contributions in 39 games so far this season.
His form has inevitably sparked speculation about a potential permanent move or interest from other European clubs, something that could directly benefit Manchester United financially.
United are understood to have inserted a 50% sell-on clause into Greenwood’s deal, meaning any future transfer involving Marseille could result in a sizeable windfall for the club.
With Marseille now entering a period of uncertainty following Longoria’s departure, questions will naturally be asked about the direction of the club and how it may impact Greenwood’s long-term future.
In their official statement, Marseille confirmed: “McCourt Global and Pablo Longoria have reached an agreement on the terms of his departure.”
They added: “Olympique de Marseille wishes to acknowledge the commitment, passion and dedication shown by Pablo Longoria over the last six years at the club. The club sincerely wishes him all the best for the future.”
Longoria also issued a farewell message, saying: “Pablo Longoria thanks Olympique de Marseille for the trust placed in him over these six seasons and expresses his deep gratitude to all the staff, players and fans who have been part of this journey.”
For Manchester United, this situation is one to watch closely, as any shift at Marseille could accelerate decisions around Greenwood’s future and potentially bring financial benefit back to Old Trafford.
