Manchester United continue to monitor the progress of several former academy graduates and first-team departures as they establish themselves across Europe, with one in particular now firmly back in the spotlight after a standout season in France.
The focus at Old Trafford remains on building on this season and into next, but attention has also turned to how former players are performing abroad, especially those who have rediscovered form since leaving the Premier League.
One such player has rebuilt his reputation in impressive fashion, delivering a season strong enough to earn recognition among the best performers in French football.
Mason Greenwood included in Ligue 1 Team of the Year
Mason Greenwood has been named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year after a prolific campaign with Olympique de Marseille, as the club announced on their website, underlining his status as one of the division’s most decisive attackers.
The 24-year-old was officially honoured at the UNFP Awards in Paris, where he was also shortlisted for the league’s top individual prize, Player of the Year.
That award ultimately went to Ousmane Dembele, whose season with Paris Saint-Germain once again drew widespread acclaim as they closed in on domestic dominance and another deep Champions League run.
Despite missing out on the top prize, Greenwood’s statistical output placed him firmly among the elite in France this season.
He finished the campaign with 26 goals and 10 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions, including 16 league goals, consistently carrying Marseille’s attacking threat in key moments.
His form has also helped keep Marseille competitive in the upper half of the table, with late contributions such as his winner against Le Havre proving crucial to their European push.
However, he won’t be playing Champions League football next season as Marseille are mathematically out of the equation to secure that spot next season.
Speaking after being named in the Team of the Year, Mason Greenwood said, “This season has been difficult at times for us as a team, especially in the last few months.
“But, individually, I think I’ve had a good season. There are some incredible players in this Team of the Year, so it’s nice for me to get this award.”
While his on-field impact has been widely praised, there are underlying tensions at Marseille, particularly involving sporting director Medhi Benatia.
Despite that, his inclusion in the league’s best eleven marks another major milestone in a career that has been carefully rebuilt away from Manchester United since his departure in 2024.
