Tottenham Hotspur placed a clear emphasis on sharpening their attack over the summer, aiming to build on last season’s Europa League triumph.
The arrivals of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani were intended to add to their firepower and give Thomas Frank a realistic chance of competing for a European spot. Yet, most of the Lilywhites’ issues lie in the attacking department. Following the sudden dip in form since mid-October, the club’s hierarchy is ready to splurge in the upcoming winter transfer window, after their spending power got boosted by the Lewis Family’s recent £100m cash injection.
A new centre-forward would be ideal for Tottenham, especially with Dominic Solanke having not played for several months and unlikely to return to action before February after the emergence of new reports. Richarlison is the leading the top scorer with seven goals this season, but his patchy fitness record means he cannot be relied upon, while Kolo Muani is slowly getting up to the speed of the Premier League.
Tottenham have been linked with several strikers in recent weeks and months, and one name that has emerged in recent reports is Marseille’s in-form man, Mason Greenwood.
Mason Greenwood continues to thrive for Marseille in France, following his move from Manchester United in 2024. He has registered 13 goals and four assists in 20 appearances across all competitions so far this season, leading to growing speculation over whether a return to the Premier League could be possible.
Now, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Greenwood’s chances of returning to the Premier League are considered unlikely as Tottenham and other clubs are not planning to act on their previous interest.
On the back of a controversial history from his Manchester United days and any potential backlash (from fans in particular) to his signing, a move back to England remains off limits at this time.
Instead, it is felt that the one-cap England international will put himself in the shop window, and a move to La Liga is more likely at this stage if he’s to get a high-profile move. Both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have shown an interest in the Marseille star, who scored twice in the 3-2 away win over Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
In many ways, this development could be a boon in disguise for Spurs. From a purely footballing perspective, Greenwood’s quality, ambipedal finishing, versatility, and top-flight experience make him an appealing target. He is the current top scorer in Ligue 1 this season and one of the most in-form forwards in Europe, someone who has the potential to make a serious impact on the north Londoners’ attacking unit.
However, the 24-year-old’s off-field controversy, legal issues and unceremonious exit from Man United do not bode well for a club like Tottenham that wants to slowly but steadily grow under Frank and not attract unnecessary media attention. While Greenwood has done well to rebuild his career in France, his reputation remains tarnished and Spurs just cannot compromise on their principles.
That being said, the Lilywhites must stay far away from Greenwood’s signing and look out for alternative options to bolster their frontline.
