Manchester United’s midfield has looked very different this summer following the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, with Michael Carrick already experimenting with new combinations.
The new additions have provided Carrick with extra depth, while several established players have also been handed opportunities to impress during pre-season.
One of the biggest positives of the summer so far has been the form of Mason Mount, who has enjoyed a strong run of performances after an injury-hit spell at Old Trafford.
Mason Mount has featured prominently in Carrick’s plans, often operating as a number eight with Santos sitting deeper behind him in midfield.
There had been questions over Mount’s future earlier in the summer, with reports in June suggesting he had been offered to AC Milan, but the England international has responded impressively on the pitch.
However, United have now suffered a setback ahead of their next pre-season fixture, with Mount expected to miss tonight’s clash against Leeds United at Croke Park, as reported by BBC Sport.
The 27-year-old was one of United’s standout players across the opening three matches of pre-season, but he sustained a knock during Saturday’s draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg.
Mount was caught on the foot in the early stages of the game and was withdrawn before half-time.
Although he was seen walking normally after the match and made his way to the team coach without any obvious problems, it is understood that he has not trained since.
That means the midfielder is now unlikely to be involved against Leeds in Dublin, with United opting to take a cautious approach.
Following the game, Carrick moved quickly to calm concerns over the injury.
Speaking about the midfielder, Carrick said, “He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.”
It remains unclear whether Mount will recover in time for United’s final pre-season match against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Wroclaw on Saturday.
Carrick will be hoping the issue proves to be nothing more than a minor setback, particularly after Mount’s encouraging performances during pre-season.
