Mateo Amarilla is in talks over a potential move to Manchester United.

At Old Trafford, the promise of a new season has quickly given way to familiar frustrations.

Fresh faces arrived during the summer, bringing fresh hope, but the results have told a rather different story.

United welcomed Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow during the transfer window, yet only Tielemans has been afforded a consistent run in the starting XI.

Michael Carrick’s side have managed just two victories in their opening nine matches across all competitions, with the optimism of August already fading into the disappointment of October.

The club’s recruitment strategy has consequently come under scrutiny, and even those inside the dressing room have begun to voice their frustrations.

Following Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, Lisandro Martinez publicly questioned Manchester United’s hierarchy, singling out technical director Jason Wilcox over the backing provided to Carrick.

However, the Argentine has since sought to draw a line under the controversy.

On Thursday, Martinez issued an official apology following talks with the club’s leadership and manager, describing their meeting as a “very positive conversation”.

While United continue searching for answers on the pitch, their attention is also turning towards the future, with a promising young South American midfielder emerging on the club’s radar.

Who is Mateo Amarilla?

According to Bolavip, Manchester United have stepped up their interest in River Plate youngster Mateo Amarilla.

Discussions involving the relevant parties reportedly began some time ago, with United closely following the midfielder’s progress in Argentina.

However, no agreement has been reached, and a potential move to England remains some way from completion.

Born in 2011, Amarilla is just 15 years old and currently represents River Plate’s youth academy, where his performances have already begun attracting attention beyond Argentina.

The youngster was named the best player at the CONMEBOL Under-15 Evolution League, an impressive individual achievement for a footballer still taking his first steps towards the professional game.

He has also represented Argentina at youth international level and is set to participate in the Messi Cup in Miami, which runs from October 25 to November 1.

Mateo Amarilla scouting report

Born in Jose C. Paz, Amarilla is a left-footed midfielder who can operate as an attacking playmaker, in a box-to-box role or further towards the right flank.

His game is built around intelligence rather than brute force, with an ability to find pockets of space, receive possession under pressure and turn seemingly crowded situations into attacking opportunities.

Comfortable carrying the ball towards the final third, Amarilla combines close control with quick decision-making, often spotting passing opportunities before defenders can react.

His movement between the lines allows him to link midfield and attack, while his use of both feet helps him escape pressure and change the direction of play.

He is equally capable of creating chances through disguised passes or arriving late inside the penalty area to threaten goal himself.

For now, Amarilla remains a prospect rather than a finished product, and United’s reported interest is yet to produce an agreement.

But amid the growing uncertainty surrounding the present at Old Trafford, the club appears determined to ensure that its future tells a different story.
