Manchester United have officially missed out on one of their key midfield targets after Mateus Fernandes completed a high-profile move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils had monitored the talented midfielder for several months as they explored options to strengthen their midfield department ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

However, as we previously covered, Tottenham moved into a strong position after agreeing a club-to-club deal with West Ham United.

United subsequently turned their attention towards alternative targets, including AFC Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.

Now, the transfer has finally been completed.

Mateus Fernandes joins Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have officially confirmed on their website that Mateus Fernandes has joined the club on a long-term contract following the completion of his transfer from West Ham United.

The 21-year-old arrives in north London after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s brightest young midfielders.

Fernandes enjoyed an impressive campaign with West Ham, combining technical quality, creativity and defensive intensity to attract interest from several top clubs across Europe.

Mateus said: “I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the Head Coach was a key part of why I have decided to join.

“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game.

“I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the Club.”

Manchester United were among those to hold a long-standing interest in the midfielder.

United explored a potential move for Fernandes during the summer window, but Spurs ultimately won the race after agreeing a deal with West Ham.

Earlier reports also suggested that United had accepted defeat in the pursuit, with club officials deciding not to match Tottenham’s valuation and instead focus on alternative midfield targets.

One such option is Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, who has emerged as a player admired by United’s recruitment team following the collapse of their pursuit of Fernandes.

For Tottenham, securing Fernandes represents another major statement of intent ahead of the new season.

The midfielder becomes one of the biggest signings in the club’s history and is expected to play an important role as Spurs prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.

After missing out on Fernandes, attention at Old Trafford will now turn towards identifying other reinforcements as Michael Carrick continues reshaping his squad ahead of a return to Champions League football.
