Injuries have continued to shape Manchester United’s season, with several key players spending long spells on the sidelines during an important period of transition under Michael Carrick.

Attention has now turned to the fitness of Matthijs de Ligt, who has been dealing with a persistent back issue that has kept him out of action for months.

The defender’s situation has now taken a significant step following confirmation of a surgical procedure.

Matthijs de Ligt has undergone surgery

Manchester United have confirmed, via their website, that Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a long-standing back injury.

The Netherlands international has not featured since November and has yet to play under Michael Carrick, despite briefly returning to training last month.

After initially hoping to return before the end of the season, the decision was made jointly with the club that surgery was the most effective long-term solution.

United described the operation as part of a carefully managed rehabilitation process aimed at ensuring full recovery.

The 26-year-old shared his reaction on social media while reflecting on a difficult spell away from the pitch.

“After 6 months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left. I’m disappointed I couldn’t help the team the last 6 months and obviously missing out on the World Cup but I am looking forward to doing everything to get back in front of the fans and feeling better again.”

United also issued a formal update on the defender’s condition following the procedure.

“Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury.

“Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action.”

The club are expected to oversee a structured recovery programme over the coming months as he focuses on rehabilitation rather than immediate return.

De Ligt also expanded on his commitment to recovery and gratitude towards those supporting him during his absence.

“Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football.

“I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career.

“I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”

De Ligt made 14 appearances earlier in the campaign before being ruled out in November and has since missed 24 matches.

His absence has meant he has not yet featured under Carrick, with United now focusing on ensuring he returns fully fit ahead of next season rather than rushing his recovery.
