Ahead of the quarterfinals of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been involved in rumors that suggested a return to the Premier League.
An odd report suggested that Brentford would pursue Pochettino to be the replacement of former manager Thomas Frank, who became the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
Pochettino confirmed his full focus on the USMNT as the objective is to win the Gold Cup this summer. The Argentine manager denied reports of being in talks with the Premier League club.
It seemed urgent to deny these reports, as it would have looked terrible to see the current USMNT head coach negotiate on a move to a new team.
Pressure has been added for Pochettino to lead the USMNT to Gold Cup glory, a tournament they haven’t won since 2021.
In a press conference ahead of the game against Costa Rica, Pochettino was asked about the links to Brentford over the past day.
The report suggested that talks between Pochettino and Brentford occurred during the Gold Cup.
Jenny Taft from Fox Sports reported that Pochettino confirmed that other clubs have reached out to the manager, but the USMNT head coach would reject calls to avoid disrespect to the national team.
Pochettino is fully focused ahead of the FIFA World Cup next year, and denying these rumors has put an end to speculation that the manager wants out.
"His answer was 'absolutely no'... And he was careful to even want to address it with me because there is no truth to this report."@JennyTaft sat down with USMNT HC Mauricio Pochettino earlier today to ask him about the reports around the Brentford job interview ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/MwsfYxDk2G

A USMNT legend who had strong words about Pochettino being linked to a move to Brentford was Alexi Lalas.
The former defender was strict in terms of how this situation should be dealt with. He did not question whether to sack Pochettino if the reports of him beginning talks with Brentford were true.
"If that had been true and our Head Coach was interviewing for other jobs during the Gold Cup I would be here telling you he needs to resign immediately."@AlexiLalas shares his thoughts on the false reports of Mauricio Pochettino interviewing with Brentford pic.twitter.com/ZxE6ZIhC0C

The USMNT will take on Costa Rica in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup. If they advance to the semifinals, their opponents will be between Canada or Guatemala.
Canada and Guatemala will play before the USMNT. The semifinals of the Gold Cup will be played on July 2. Mexico and Honduras have already booked their spots in the Gold Cup semifinals after their respective wins yesterday.
