Maxi Araujo makes transfer decision amid Manchester United links

Manchester United’s search for defensive reinforcements has remained one of the biggest talking points of the summer transfer window.

While Patrick Dorgu has often been deployed further forward, Luke Shaw’s advancing age means the club are still assessing long-term options on the left side of defence.

According to Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, Sporting have put plans in place to ensure Maxi Araujo remains in Lisbon for at least another season, despite growing interest from England.

The Portuguese newspaper splashed the defender across its front page alongside the headline “Maxi stays”, underlining the club’s determination to keep hold of one of their key players.

Sporting are also preparing a contract revision that will move Araujo close to the top of the club’s wage structure while strengthening his leadership role within the dressing room.

That represents a significant turnaround after the defender reportedly considered leaving during the World Cup, when interest from Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham intensified.

Arsenal have also been credited with admiring the full-back, meaning United were never alone in the race for his signature.

Araujo’s current contract already runs until 2029 and contains an €80 million release clause, making any move difficult even before Sporting’s latest stance.

For Carrick, it means another potential target could now be slipping away as United continue weighing up solutions for the left side of defence before the transfer window closes.
