McTominay and Gilmour first Scottish Serie A Champions in 120 years

Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour have become the first Scottish players to win the Serie A title in 120 years after claiming the Scudetto in the final round of the 2024-25 season with Napoli on Friday night.

Napoli have won the Serie A title with a one-point margin over second-placed Inter, who pushed the title race right until the very end. So close was the fight for the Scudetto, that there was still a possibility of a Serie A play-off to settle the title heading into the final weekend.

Among the stars of Antonio Conte’s victorious Partenopei squad was former Manchester United midfielder McTominay, who joined for a €30.5m fee and a 10% sell-on clause at the end of the summer transfer window.

He has gone on to provide 12 league goals and six assists from central midfield in his first season in Italy, and has also been included in the list of nominees for the Serie A MVP award.

Gilmour also joined Napoli on deadline day in the last summer transfer window, signing a contract until the summer of 2029 with a reported transfer fee of €14m plus up to €4.75m in bonuses.

The 23-year-old has had to bide his time for opportunities in the starting XI at the Stadio Maradona, but has played an important role in the second half of the season after injuries to Stanislav Lobotka and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

McTominay and Gilmour are now the first Scotland internationals to win the Serie A title in 120 years, dating back to 1905 when Jack Diment and James Squair won Juventus’s first ever top-flight title.

While Serie A has been graced by some of Scotland’s finest talents over the years, Denis Law, Graeme Souness and Joe Jordan among them, none of them have ever won the top-flight title in Italy.
