Celtic’s first media conference for the new season took place earlier today and Conor Spence went along to represent The Celtic Star…

Stephen McManus, the former Celtic captain and Shay Given the former Newcastle United goalkeeper, who was a Celt in his early days in the game, were holding a joint media conference to talk about the upcoming pre-season friendly at Celtic Park between Celtic and Newcastle United on Saturday 19 July.

Shay Given confirmed that Newcastle have already sold out their large allocation for the game at Paradise and the Celtic support will certainly be there looking to get a first sighting of Kieran Tierney back in the Hoops and maybe a few more new signings on top. There’s certainly been enough early summer speculation ahead of the transfer window actually opening next week.

Eddie Howe, who was so close to becoming Celtic manager back in the the spring of 2021, eventually ended up at St James’ Park and this season delivered a first domestic trophy for Newcastle since 1955. That cup was at Celtic Park today, as indeed was the Scottish League Cup which Celtic won back in December, beating theRangers in the final.

Stephen McManus was asked about Celtic’s season last time around and reckoned that the two trophies and a memorable Champions League campaign, plus debuts for several of his B Team stars were the highlights.

Shay Given talked about Celtic Park being so very different to his time here, name-checking the old Jungle and the Newcastle representative also stated that Celtic does get the respected south of the border.
