Mexico captain officially signs for Manchester United

Manchester United supporters were left frustrated after Tuesday’s transfer deadline passed without the left-back many had expected the club to add.

United even explored a dramatic late move for Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

However, the potential loan collapsed after the club failed to agree on the structure of a future permanent deal.

Left-back had been an area of focus throughout the summer.

Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall was among United’s leading targets.

Meanwhile, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Alejandro Balde, David Raum, Jorge Salinas, Joaquin Seys and Antonee Robinson were also discussed at different stages.

Instead, Michael Carrick’s major additions were concentrated elsewhere.

Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans all arrived in a completely revamped midfield.

Karl Darlow also arrived to provide experienced goalkeeping cover.

Despite the disappointment of deadline day, United have now officially completed another signing.

Manchester United officially sign Mexico star

The arrival is for Manchester United Women, whose transfer window remains open until 11pm on Thursday.

Manchester United confirmed on their official website that Rebeca Bernal has agreed to join the club, subject to registration, signing a contract until June 2029.

The 29-year-old is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder or centre-back.

She arrives with the sort of leadership Eva Olid’s young squad was missing.

Bernal has captained Mexico at senior international level and scored the decisive goal as her country defeated Chile to win gold at the 2023 Pan American Games.

Her club career has also been built around responsibility rather than simply appearances.

Bernal established herself as a major figure at Monterrey after joining when Liga MX Femenil launched, before testing herself in the NWSL with Washington Spirit in 2025.

She immediately added silverware in the United States, converting in the shootout as Spirit won the Challenge Cup on her debut.

United say Bernal brings quality, experience and a winning mentality.

The Mexico captain has now become the club’s fourth new signing ahead of the 2026/27 WSL season.
